ABOUT DIGITALIZATION PROJECT

Digital `inclusion is a key factor of economic and social progress and is high on the inclusive growth agenda of many African States. It has a proven impact on productivity and growth of many small-farms, helps create decent jobs, and reduction of financial vulnerability of farmers, especially in rural communities and far off remote locations. It also has an impact on rural women and the empowerment of young people, provides access to education and enhances local authority services to support the social inclusion of marginalised and vulnerable people. It also has the advantage of broadening access to capital through more adequate financial services for rural communities to boost savings, expand entrepreneurship, and enable more farmers to invest in themselves, education and health of their families.

Banks and non-banks have started to use digital financial services to overcome the limits of traditional banks to reach new customers in remote and underserved isolated communities. In Africa 19 markets now has more mobile accounts than bank accounts. In spite of the great potential of digital finance services, there are still many challenges to overcome including an enabling policy environment to support its growth. Digitalisation can work well to bring affordable services to many farmer clients. It can promote partnerships for the deployment of innovative and scalable digital solutions to educate farmers on innovative agriculture practises through e-learning on sustainable agriculture practises to enable farmers adapt to new solutions against climate change.

Innovative partnerships involving civil society, training institutions, mobile operators, financial institutions and farmer groups has the potentials to promote digital solutions including accessible financial solutions for investments in new social and environmental enterprises in remote locations to accelerate digital entrepreneurship and to enhance livelihoods solutions for rural communities. Innovative Partnerships with local authorities and financial institutions will enable the deployment of digital solutions to enable farmers access new sources of financing from Public-Private Funds for investments in environmental and social projects underpinned by an enabling environment to promote digital solutions for farmers in remote locations, and contribute to inclusive growth and reduction of social inequalities in rural communities across Nigeria.
